This paper aims to investigate the request realizations in gRoman Holidayh. All the request realizations in this story were classified into the three styles; Style I is the most direct or explicit style, Style II is conventionally indirect one, and Style III is non-conventionally indirect one.
Since the two main characters, Ann and Joe, switch from one style to another in accordance with the situation, their code-switching is analyzed in terms of the following situational factors: social distance, status, and topic. This analysis enables us to see the significant difference of code-switching between Ann and Joe. In order to decrease the degree of face-threatening of request, Ann switches from Style I to Style II, while Joe switches from Style I to Style III. Furthermore, Joe uses Supportive Moves for Head Acts more frequently than Ann does. In other words, Joe diversifies his style to perform the speech act of request. On the other hand, Ann uses a limited set of styles.
This investigation, thus, clarified how the two main characters differ from each other in the choice of request realizations. These findings show us that the code-switching is very significant for the study of politeness in the request realization.
