The purpose of this paper is to analyze the writing styles of Fitzgerald and Hemingway in their short stories, to examine how their different styles influenced them and to show a correlation between their writing styles and their works. In order to do so, I chose Fitzgerald's gBabylon Revisitedh and Hemingway's gThe Snows of Kilimanjaroh since the theme of these works is the same in that both of the main characters feel nostalgia for old places and deeds and regret their past lives throughout the stories. I compare their writing styles in similar scenes from both stories so that their differences are clearly illustrated.
Consequently I found that Fitzgerald's writing style is lyric, abstract, and unclear while Hemingway's is clear, concise, concrete and compressed. Although their writing styles are different, both of them convey to the reader the heroes' reminiscences and repentance. Fitzgerald's and Hemingway's styles, however, create different personalities, tones and images in the stories. Their different styles result in distinctive works and show that there is a correlation between writing style and its product. Their works are harmonious with plots, characters, tones and images produced by the writers' styles and with characters' emotions transcending their styles. |
