English Usage and Style No.16 Synopsis
Quantity Expressions Used in the Journalistic English
Sadaaki Inoue
An abundance of quantity expressions appear in English newspapers and magazines in greater frequency than in Japanese ones. The writer concludes at the end of the paper that the main reason for this abundance originates from the fact that emphasis is placed on assertiveness and individualism in American and European cultures, and this fact greatly contributes to the production of innumerable quantity expressions, coupled with the existence of a great number of synonyms in the English Language, while in Japan, where modesty is a virtue, less emphasis is put on the value of words, leading to the Japanese characteristic of being rather taciturn in human relations.
